National Institute of Open Schooling:–
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is the board of education under the Union Government of India. It was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India in 1989[1] to provide education to all segments of society under the motive to increase literacy and aimed forward for flexible learning. The NIOS is a national board that administers examinations for Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations similar to the CBSE and the CISCE. It also offers vocational courses after high school.
THE MISSION OF NIOS:
is to provide education to all with special concern for girls and women, rural youth, working men and women, SCs and STs, differently abled persons and other disadvantaged persons who because of one or other reason could not continue their education in the formal system of education.
IS N.I.O.S. certificate valid?
In the eyes of GOVT. as well as legally it is valid to pursue any higher education. But our Indian society will never accept. They think Open education is a waste of time and they don’t value a student who does education by Open means, not only NIOS but they do the same with IGNOU and other open education boards. So i request NIOS students please if you faced any year backs or dropped out of education, continue your education with NIOS and prove the society wrong who say NIOS is not valid. Some private institutions won’t accept NIOS certificates for admission. It’s not because NIOS is not valid, It’s because in their eyes or as per their standards NIOS has no value . Don’t join such institutes or even don’t argue with them . NIOS is a well recognised board run by MHRD in India.
IS NIOS APPROVED BY NCTE?
NIOS has designed and developed Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) … The D.El.Ed course of NIOS is approved by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE).
IS NIOS VALID FOR KPSC?
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) formerly known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organization in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India as this is government accredited it is valid for all government exam including PSC and Railway.

NIOS COURSES LIST
Secondary: – It offers a national board examination at two levels: secondary and higher secondary. The secondary level is equivalent to the ICSE, CBSE, SSLC, and other national or state Standard 10 board examinations. The higher secondary level is equivalent to the PUC and other Standard 12 board examinations.
Senior secondary:- Senior Secondary Course. This Course is designed for those who have passed the Xth standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board and would like to continue their education towards a Senior Secondary Certification, equivalent to XII standard.
On Demand:- On Demand Examination: ODE is the system of conducting Examination by NIOS, where Student books his dates for taking exams, considering his readiness to appear for the exam. Availability of dates can be known online.

ALL ABOUT NIOS
NIOS stands for ‘National Institute of Open Schooling. In 1979, CBSE (Central Board of School Education) started a flexible inbuilt project for providing quality education. Formerly, it was known as the National Open School till 2002. Later, it was established as the name NIOS in 1989 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The motive behind open schooling is to provide universal, regular and holistic education to bring a rise in literacy level in remote as well as rural areas. The aim of this institute is to support skill development and flexible learning methodology so that most of the students can get an education even after their school or working hours. NIOS facilitates their students in a phased manner to provide education at pre-degree level courses, secondary level and vocational training. The whole curriculum is designed by NIOS itself, leading with a certified examination process similar to the CBSE and CISCE boards, through the open learning system. In spite of distance education, NIOS also provides regular courses at the stage of secondary and senior secondary levels.

NIOS Development Path:
NIOS is the largest open school system in the world. At present, about 2.71 million students enroll with NIOS at various levels of education. It has a wider network of 5 departments, one sub-regional center, 20 regional centers and more than 6500 study centers and approximate 1500 vocational centers in India as well as overseas.
Courses Offered by NIOS:
NIOS offers five types of courses based on open education programme:
- OBE (Open Basic Education):
Open Basic Education is introduced by NIOS for providing basic education to the learners. The motto of this education is ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’. This elementary education programme is equivalent to any other regular affiliated formal schools.
‘A’ Level Course: This course is equivalent to class III.
‘B’ Level Course: This course is equivalent to class V.
‘C’ Level Course: This course is equivalent to class VIII.
- Secondary Course: This course is equivalent to class Xth. Students who have passed class 8Thcan pursue the secondary level course. NIOS offers this course in 9 regional languages; English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Odia. This course includes 28 subjects among which 17 are the language subjects. Students have to choose minimum 5 core subjects along with 2 language subjects. This course can be completed between 2-5 years of time duration.
- Senior Secondary Course: This course is equivalent to class XII. This course is offered in six regional languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Urdu and Odia. This course includes 29 subjects among which 9 are the language subjects. Students have to choose minimum 5 core subjects along with 2 language subjects. This course can be completed between 2-5 years of time duration.
- Vocational Education Courses:
NIOS offers various vocational courses along with these basic and secondary courses. The objective is to teach students about target skills in various fields such as Agriculture and Animal Husbandry; Business, Accounts and Commerce, IT and Technology; Engineering and Architecture, Health and Paramedical Science, Home Science, Hospitality, Management programs, Teacher Training and much more. There are more than hundred types of vocational courses which can be selected by the students as per their interests.
- Life Enrichment Programmes:
These are the courses offered by NIOS to enrich their students in the fields such as women empowerment(Paripurana Mahila), Yoga and meditation, Indian music and enrichment of knowledge. These courses can also be conducted as certified examination courses.
Examination Procedure:
NIOS public exams are held twice a year, firstly during the month of April and May and secondly during the month of October and November as per the date sheet announced by the institute itself. Students can appear for the examination on demand at secondary and senior secondary level exams only in those subjects which they opt for subject wise learning. Results are declared after six weeks of the last date of examination. One can visit their website for all the queries related to date sheet and results.
How to Get Admission:
For Academic Secondary and Sr. Secondary:
Students can get online admissions to NIOS in the following ways:
- They can visit their website nios.ac.in and get admissions online directly.
- They can visit the nearest study center or AI’s (accreditation center) and ask them to help you to register online.
- They can also get online admissions at the nearest regional centers.
- Students can also get help from the Common Services Centre (CSC’s) of the Government of India for getting online admissions to NIOS.
For Vocational Education:
All learners can apply for vocational education. The minimum eligibility criteria will be 10th pass from any of the recognized Board of school education. Students can choose subject wise and state wise lists for getting online admission forms.
For ITI students:
Students who want to pursue IT and technology fields can apply for the online ITI learner programme powered by NIOS. This is a 2-year regular course offered to the students under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). Students opt to choose a minimum of five subjects. 3 subjects will be the computer based subjects, one will be the language subject and one other subject can be chosen among other core subjects offered by NIOS itself.
Under NEPIA Project:
NIOS also offers courses under the NEPIA scheme. It is a joint educational project for Indian Army(NEPIA) and NIOS to provide Human Resource Quotient along with various educational qualifications up to the Indian Army troops. Students can download the prospectus for admission forms and can apply for them online.
For Double Enrollment:
If a student passed secondary or senior secondary exam in a regular school then he will be eligible for a higher level of course. He can choose up to four subjects to gain their academics. After passing the exam, only the mark sheet will be issued by NIOS, but not by the certificates.
For Overseas students:
If a student has passed middle or high school level through a foreign board and wants to take admission for higher education through NIOS, then he should have to attach the letter from the embassy that you had passed the exam level equivalent to Indian exam.
